"In this project, PlanetLab makes it possible to carry out measurements from many machines scattered around the world, this will help us observe differences between diverse parts of the network."

Researchers on this project are building an "Internet radar" which will permanently "draw" the Internet topology as it evolves over time. Specifically, a new measurement tool has been designed to observe routing dynamics around certain machines by running periodic traceroute-like programs to a given set of destinations. Like a conventional traceroute, this tool probes a set of destinations, but does so in a tree-like manner, reducing the induced traffic and data redundancy, and thus is considerably faster and more efficient.
In this project, PlanetLab plays a key role since it makes it possible to take such measurements from many machines scattered around the world: more than 150 monitors were used, for durations ranging from several weeks to more than three months, in the spring and summer of 2007. In this way, the project observes and investigates the differences between geographically diverse parts of the network. Researchers also discovered that the part of the topology around a given computer evolves much more quickly than expected over time.
Finally, researchers on this project designed a methodology for detecting statistically significant events in the dynamics of the topology around a given monitor, such as major routing changes of failures. Using data from the project made it possible to assert that some of these events were caused by known incidents such as router shutdown.
