Using PlanetLab nodes with a well-known geographic location as landmarks, researchers have devised a geolocation scheme called Constraint-Based Geolocation (CBG). The landmark PlanetLab nodes estimate the delay between a target host and, through triangulation, they compute a possible location estimate. The work of researchers at Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC), France, University of Boston, USA and Laboratório Nacional de Computação Científica, Brazil, makes up the bulk of this investigation, while Delft University's research advanced developments in this area, assessing the geographic resolution of geolocation databases, by comparing their location estimates with CBG.
