The Customers Pillar brings PlanetLab Europe closer to a select set of pilot "customers", or testbeds that are testing novel ideas in networking research. These customers federate with and make use of the platform, allowing us to understand their needs and to incrementally develop PlanetLab Europe to better serve them. This pillar also develops benchmarking techniques for experimentation.
This pillar consists of four work packages:
- WP6 Wireless - leader: Prof. Leandros Tassiulas, CERTH
Integrates wireless technologies into PlanetLab Europe, and defines a common framework for conducting experiments in a number of wireless testbeds. As part of this effort, the work package deploys a 50-node Wi-Fi testbed, a WiMAX testbed, and a multi-link testbed using diverse technologies (HSDPA, WLAN, Bluetooth, ZigBee, 3GPP-LTE-like).
- WP7 Content - leader: Dr Dirk Trossen, BT
Looks at the testbed needs for content-driven networking, and in particular the ways in which this can make use of virtualisation of the network protocol stack.
- WP8 SAC - leader: Dr Franck Legendre, ETH Zurich
Brings in two existing testbeds, those of the IST Haggle and ANA projects, in the new area of Situated and Autonomic Communications (SAC), as well as looking at the needs of Delay-Tolerant Networking (DTN).
- WP9 Benchmarking - leader: Dr Walid Dabbous, INRIA
A transversal work package, Benchmarking looks at the common needs of a broad range of testbed technologies for effective means to validate their experiments in an uncontrolled environment.
