Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per l Informatica (CINI)

CINI is a consortium of computer science and computer engineering research groups operating within Italian universities. It was founded in 1990 as a non-profit organisation to foster the cooperation of Italian computer scientists and engineers in nationwide and international projects in the area of computing and data communication. It currently comprises the major Italian universities and receives support by the Ministry for University and Research and by the Ministry for Industry. ITEM is the CINI National Laboratory for Computer Science and Multimedia Systems, located in Napoli, and is home of the COMICS research group. The ITEM laboratory has been established by CINI, in cooperation with University of Napoli Federico II, with the specific objective of tackling research and technological issues in the area of design, control and management of complex network infrastructures and distributed information systems. ITEM has been or is currently involved in the following major European projects: CADENUS (FP5-IST-1999-11017), INTERMON (FP5-IST-2001-34123), NETQOS (FP6-IST-2005-033516), and the European Networks of Excellence E-NEXT (FP6-IST-2003-506869) and CONTENT (FP6-IST-2005- 0384239).

Role in the OneLab project:

While in OneLab's first phase the CINI research unit was responsible for dissemination and the UMTS component in Work Package 4, in OneLab2 it brings its expertise to the area of networking in general, and more specifically in the design and implementation of distributed networking test beds and wireless technologies. CINI participates in the activities of WP5 Packet Tracking and of WP6 Wireless.
