The BBC has chosen an image created by OneLab's DIMES testbed to illustrate one of its series of online articles, "The Beauty of Maps". The article is entitled "Digital Worlds: Map of the Internet" and presents a colourful illustration that represents the structure of the Internet in a visual form. The DIMES testbed is the product of the DIMES project, which aims to study the structure and topology of the Internet, and is run by OneLab innovation partner Tel Aviv University. The testbed it is based on distributed light-weight software agents hosted by a community of thousands of volunteers worldwide, and offers the ability to launch topology measurements of the Internet from multiple vantage points, as well as access to a vast database of accumulated measurement data.
On a typical day, the DIMES server records 3.5 million measurements from 1300 agents in over 50 countries. Using the DIMES testbed is free and simple. For further information on how to download topologies and raw data, and launch your own measurements, please see the DIMES website. |
