Google Tech Talk: Emulation developments

Professor Luigi Rizzo of the University of Pisa, a key OneLab researcher, has given a Google Tech Talk on emulation developments, entitled "New Developments in Link Emulation and packet Scheduling in FreeBSD, Linux, and Windows".

Luigi Rizzo is an associate Professor at the Universita` di Pisa, and a long time FreeBSD and Asterisk developer. He has worked on various networking topics including multicast congestion control, emulation, and operating system support for high performance networking.

In this talk he gives an overview of some recent activity done at the Universita` di Pisa on link emulation and packet scheduling. The two main topics covered are the following:

the "dummynet" link emulator shaper at http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/dummynet/ which has been recently ported to Linux and Windows (in addition to FreeBSD and OSX), and extended with support for multiple scheduling algorithms
fast packet scheduling algorithms, seen at http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/qfq/

OneLab researchers have deployed the Dummynet emulation technology accross all the nodes in the PlanetLab Europe testbed, and aim to soon begin deployment of the new features described in the video.

In addition to the work presented in the video, Luigi and his colleagues are currently working on disk scheduling, and will be glad to discuss the topic with people interested.
