The Active Probing Equipment or APE box is an experimental hardware, which is currently under active development at OneLab lead partner ELTE. APE hardware works in parellel to the main server, and offers a low-cost, low-maintenance solution for tenth-of-microsecond resolution active measurements. A drawback to these advantages is that the measurements offered are less accurate and less flexible than those carried out by the the main ETOMIC sever PC. However, APE can be scaled up to a global measurement infrastructure at a reasonable cost, adding a qualitatively new feature to the future active Internet measurements. The APE module of ETOMIC advanced network monitoring equipment also serves as a GPS signal splitter. The APE box is shipped to participating partners with a GPS unit and a wiring kit by the manufacturer, EDMS Ltd. The complete APE kit contains the following components: APE box, GPS receiver,GPS antenna, power supply, serial cable, RJ11-DB9 (R232) cable, RJ11-RJ11 cable, patch cable, warning labels for GPS installation, 2 metal xings with bolts.See OneLab2 deliverable D4.3 "Deployed advanced monitoring infrastructure" for further details.
