NICTA is Australia's national Centre of Excellence in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) research. It was established as part of an Australian government initiative ("Backing Australia's Ability") to promote science and innovation. NICTA aims to capitalise on the untapped Australian ICT talents of an international standard. NICTA has been conducting innovative research in computer and mobile device networking for several years. It is currently a partner in other EU projects within the FP6, namely the EuQoS project (End-to-end QoS support over heterogeneous networks) and the AN project (Ambient Networks).

NICTA has a strong experience in the design, implementation and evaluation of various large-scale testbed systems. Indeed NICTA has built and is currently maintaining and extending several wireless research testbeds, such as i) an indoor testbed with more that 20 nodes with multiple wireless interfaces, and ii) an outdoor testbed deployed at street intersections in a Sydney neighbourhood. Furthermore, NICTA has been cooperating with WINLAB at Rutgers University in the development of a management and control framework (OMF) for the NSF-funded ORBIT test bed, which is also now designated as a core GENI technology component.

Role in the OneLab project:

In the OneLab project's second phase (OneLab2), NICTA works mostly within WP6 Wireless, planning to extend OMF to support federation of wireless testbed resources, not only within the second-phase OneLab testbeds, but also across the other OMF-based testbeds in the US, Australia, and others currently under construction.
